Oyelo

What Oyelo can do, how to use it, and what to do when something goes wrong.

Quick start

1

Dub a video

Open a video and press the Oyelo button in its corner — or Dub this video in the popup, or right-click the page. You hear it in your language.

2

Translate Any Audio

Open it from the popup or the right-click menu, and share a tab, a window, the screen or your microphone.

3

Read it again

Every session is saved in History, ready to copy or download as text or subtitles.

Dub a video

Oyelo dubs video on YouTube, Udemy, Coursera, Bilibili and any other site with a video player. The popup's Source row sets how it learns what is said:

Auto

Uses the video's own subtitles when it has them — exact wording, in sync — and listens to its speech when it has none.

Best for · Almost every video: subtitles on YouTube, Udemy, Coursera and Bilibili, speech everywhere else.

Speech only

Always listens to the video's sound and translates it live, a moment behind the speaker, even when it has subtitles.

Best for · OpenAI Live or Gemini Live, which speak in their own voice, and subtitles that do not match what is said.

  • Press the Oyelo button in the corner of the video to start, and again to stop. Dub this video in the popup, or Oyelo in the page's right-click menu, does the same.
  • If the button covers the player's controls, drag it by its grip to another corner. Oyelo remembers where you put it.
  • The transcript icon beside it opens the transcript panel: every line, original and translated, as it is spoken.
  • Turn on Show subtitles in the popup for a translated caption line on the video, and set its size.
  • Use the Origin and Translated sliders to balance the original sound against the dubbed voice.

Translate Any Audio

For anything that makes sound, not only video: a meeting, a call, a podcast, a game, or the person in front of you. Open it with the Translate Any Audio button in the popup or from the page's right-click menu; it runs in its own window.

  • Computer audio: pick a Chrome tab, a window or the whole screen in Chrome's sharing dialog, with its sound shared.
  • Microphone: translates what is said into the microphone you choose — someone in the room, or you.
  • Captions appear as the speech is recognised. The speaker button reads the translations aloud, or keeps them silent.
  • Two-way ⇄: choose two languages and each one is translated into the other, for a conversation between two people. Offered by the Realtime (Free) and Soniox Speech Services.
  • Closing the window stops listening, so keep it open while you need it.

Microphone on laptop speakers? Wear headphones, so the microphone does not hear the translated voice again.

Transcripts & History

  • While a video is dubbed, the transcript panel shows each line with its translation. Move and resize it as you like.
  • The History button — in the popup, the transcript panel and the Translate Any Audio window — opens every saved session, newest first, with a filter by kind.
  • Copy the translation, the original or both, or download a session as text (.txt) or as subtitles (.srt) for any video player.

Transcripts stay in your browser and are never uploaded. The 100 most recent sessions are kept, and you can delete any of them.

Services, voices & keys

Everything works free, with no account and no key: Realtime (Free) recognition, Google translation and the free voices.

Want more? Click 🔑 beside a row in the popup to add your own key for a paid service:

  • Speech: Soniox, for one uninterrupted connection; or OpenAI Live and Gemini Live, which translate and speak in their own voice.
  • Translate: OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek or Claude, for more natural translations that keep names and context consistent.
  • Voice: Google Cloud HD or Soniox TTS, for natural male and female voices.

A key is stored only in your browser and sent only to its own service, which bills you directly.

Troubleshooting

I don't see the Dub button on the video.

Reload the page after installing or updating Oyelo, then start the video. The button appears over the video once it can be dubbed.

I can't find Oyelo's icon in the toolbar.

Chrome hides new extensions in its extensions menu (the puzzle-piece button at the top right): press the pin beside Oyelo to keep it in the toolbar. You can also right-click any page and choose Oyelo.

The video has no subtitles.

Nothing to do: with the Source on Auto, Oyelo dubs it from its speech by itself. Subtitles are read on YouTube, Udemy, Coursera and Bilibili videos that have them.

The voice is a little behind the video.

Speech is translated a sentence at a time, so the voice follows a moment behind. When the video has subtitles, Auto reads them and stays in sync.

The translation is heard twice, or the microphone stops responding.

The microphone is hearing the translated voice from your speakers. Wear headphones, or turn off reading aloud in the Translate Any Audio window.

The voice changed to Google (Free).

The voice you chose was unavailable — its key is missing or was rejected, or it reached its limit — so Google (Free) stepped in. Check the key with 🔑 in the popup.

Some videos cannot be dubbed.

Films and series on protected streaming services block access to their sound and subtitles, so Oyelo cannot dub them.

How do I change the language of Oyelo itself?

Click 🌐 in the popup's header and pick one of 53 languages. Auto follows your browser's language.

Privacy

Oyelo has no server of its own. Your settings, keys and transcripts stay in your browser; only the text or sound being translated is sent, straight to the service doing that step.
